Caljan ESG Wheel

The Caljan Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Wheel represents the culmination of a collaborative process, drawing on a wealth of ideas and expertise as we work toward a more sustainable future. The spokes of the wheel highlight the key issues we’ve identified as most relevant to focus on. Maintaining balance between the Environmental, Social, and Governance components is essential, reflecting the interconnected nature of sustainability.

Environment

We prioritize energy efficiency, waste reduction, and emissions control. Our ISO 9001, 14001, and 50001 certifications in Denmark and Latvia reflect this commitment. In 2023, our new German facility launched with sustainability at its core. We’re working toward SBTi validation and aim for 100% renewable energy use by 2030 while reducing CO₂ emissions.

Social Responsibility

We promote a diverse, inclusive, and safe workplace. Safety training and initiatives have led to an 87% reduction in LTIs and a 78% drop in total incidents in 2023. We also support global causes like SOLVATTEN, which provides clean water to those in need.

Governance

Our governance is rooted in transparency, compliance, and accountability. All policies and procedures are centralized on our Caljan IPW platform. Strategic safety reporting and training, along with a strong anti-corruption policy, help ensure ethical and consistent practices across the company.

Commitments

Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)

SDGs are a set of 17 goals adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, that aim to reduce emissions, achieve net-zero goals and improve global wellbeing. Caljan is focusing on goals 7, 8, 12 and 13.

ISO 50001

ISO 50001 is an international standard for Energy Management Systems (EnMS). It helps organizations systematically manage and improve their energy performance by reducing energy consumption and costs, increasing energy efficiency, supporting sustainability and emissions reduction, integrating energy management into daily operations and long-term strategy. Caljan largest production site holds an active ISO 14001 since 2023.

United Nations Global Compact (UNGC)

UNGC is world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative. Caljan has been officially abiding the UNGC since 2021. We adhere to the principles of the UN Global Compact, aiming to align our business with human rights, labor standards, environmental care, and anti-corruption principles. Our alignment is described in our QHSE policy and Code of Conduct.

Objectives

Energy Consumption

Our goal is to reduce our energy consumption by a minimum of 5% annually in relation to net sales. We aim to ensure that we continuously improve our energy efficiency and avoid unnecessary energy consumption.

Energy Mix

We aim to continue using 100% renewable electricity in all reporting Caljan entities with authority over electricity purchasing. As our operations require significant energy, we remain committed to ensuring that our electricity is clean and renewable.

CO2 Emissions

We aim to reduce scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions each by 42% by 2030, using 2022 as base year and increase our focus on scope 3. The ultimate goal is to reach Net Zero in line with SBTi no later than 2050.

Gender Ratio

All Boards of Directors must comprise 40–60% women by 2030 at the latest. All management teams and salary-setting managers must comprise 40–60% women by 2040 at the latest.

Employee Health

We aim to enhance workplace health and wellbeing by integrating effective ergonomics and promoting collaborative work practices that support long‑term employee health, safety, and performance, enabling employees to thrive physically and mentally.

Employee safety

We continuously work to identify and prevent potential hazards, ensuring that a strong safety culture remains one of our core values. Our commitment is to protect all employees and strive toward achieving our Vision Zero goal, with a particular focus on eliminating Lost Time Injuries (LTI).

Code of Conduct

We strive to ensure all Caljan employees have read and signed our Code of Conduct and ethics policies. All of our strategic suppliers and partners are introduced to, have signed and abide by our Supplier Code of Conduct.

Waste Management

To achieve our goal of full circularity, we aim to reduce our mixed municipal waste by 6% in 2026, develop a group‑wide waste management policy, and reduce, reuse, or otherwise recycle all materials used in our operations by 2030.

Water Management

Continuously improve our water management and reduce water consumption by ensuring effective, responsible water use, supported by the development and implementation of a group‑wide water management policy.
