Sustainability is important for us

It is all about the Planet. How the biosphere is impacted by everything from atoms to molecules, to humans and their interactions.
At Caljan, we follow a sustainable approach in order to keep our position as leader within our field. Based on our Stakeholder and Materiality Analysis, our largest impacts have been identified and prioritized. This, together with the fact that we keep gathering and analyzing data, ensures our goal-setting is ambitious, realistic and agile.

To play our part in making the Earth a better place to live, we have decided to place our main focus on the following 3 SDGs:

Sustainability has become a crucial element of the Caljan DNA. We depict it as a wheel travelling on a journey. As the journey progresses, we pick up momentum, improving step-by-step, year-by-year.

Across our four Caljan divisions; Loading & Unloading, Document Handling & Labelling, Automated Solutions and Aftermarket, we are committed to providing equipment and solutions that are both easy to use and easy to own throughout the lifecycle. The circular economy business model we deploy encompasses sourcing raw materials, extending or upgrading and disposal or recycling.

Caljan ESG Wheel

The Caljan Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Wheel is the result of a process, gathering many great ideas and knowledge on the road to a greener destination. All three parts of the ESG wheel must be in balance, as the core concept of sustainability emphasizes the interrelation between Environmental, Social and Governance.

Environment

Energy, waste and emissions are paramount here. ISO-certifications for all our manufacturing sites play an important role in achieving our goals. 

In 2021, Caljan obtained ISO 9001:2015 certification in Denmark and Latvia. The goal is to become certified in the US and Germany in 2023. Our new production facility in Germany is characterized by a strong focus on sustainability, functionality and economic efficiency. It will consume 60% less energy than conventional buildings.

In addition, we have started the process to obtain ISO 14001:2015 certification by 2023 in Latvia and Denmark. All manufacturing sites will be certified by 2024 and our biggest site, Latvia, is scheduled to reach ISO 50001:2018 certification by 2023.

Social responsibility

We fully support and encourage a diversified working environment. With employees representing numerous nationalities and age groups, we whole-heartedly welcome everybody fully based on their capabilities to do their job.

Employee welfare and zero workplace accidents are essential components of our occupational health and safety focus. A wide range of activities have been introduced to ensure everyone who forms part of the multi-ethnic fabric of our organization is integrated and understands what is expected of them in hazardous situations.

We also sponsor SOLVATTEN to help provide clean water to struggling communities. 

Governance

Codes, policies and procedures are compiled, maintained and shared in the Caljan IPW Platform, which is an Integrated Management System. These documents monitor and evaluate upon our KPIs. 

Strategic Safety Campaigns and systematic reporting on Lost Time Injuries and Near Miss, has resulted in precautionary measures being implemented proactively.

Our anti-corruption policy is incorporated into our Code of Conduct training. 

Sustainability KPIs

Our KPIs are important as they keep us accountable and in a process of constant development, evaluating whether the direction we are taking is appropriate. They all pertain to one of the ESG categories and relate to our focus SDGs.

Energy consumption

Data collection has been expanded from production facilities only to measuring our entire operation. The target is an annual relative decrease of at least 5 per cent in relation to net sales. The key ratio promotes a constant endeavor to achieve energy efficiency. 

Energy mix

The use of fossil fuels must be reduced. By 2030 at the latest, all operations within the Latour Group should only be using renewable energy. This will be quite a challenge. 

CO2 emissions

To ensure that Latour's holdings contribute to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, a target has been introduced for an annual relative reduction of at least 5 per cent of CO2 in relation to net sales. CO2 emissions will also be presented in absolute terms. 

Environmental certified facilities

By 2025 at the latest, all production facilities in the wholly-owned industrial operations must be environmentally certified according to ISO 14001. This standard is internationally accepted and is the world's most applied standard for environmental management focusing on environmental benefit. 

Gender ratio

Achieving even gender ratios is a challenge in the manufacturing sector. The goal, by 2030 at the latest, is to achieve a 40-60 gender ratio at three different levels: board of directors, senior executives and salary-setting managers. 

Workplace accidents

Everyone who works in the Latour Group should feel safe and secure during theirs working hours, regardless of their work duties. Latour has a zero vision when it comes to workplace accidents. This key ratio measures workplace accidents that have led to at least one day's sick leave. 

Workplace incidents

In order to prevent accidents during working hours, it is important to work proactively. Workplace incidents are therefore an important key ratio for identifying events that could have led to accidents, in order to prevent future accidents from occurring. 

Code of conduct

All business areas must have implemented Latour's Code of Conduct, or have developed their own and more relevant Code of Conduct internally. Each business area reports and confirms this implementation to its respective Board of Directors.
