City Link, the UK’s leading express parcel carrier has further reinforced its position in the marketplace with the installation of a new state-of-the-art automated sortation system at its hub in Coventry. A first for City Link, the new automated system is being supplied by Caljan Rite Hite Ltd and is the latest in a host of investments made by the company to further enhance its customer service offering. Representing a seven figure investment it is a huge step change for the company and one which will change the face of the business in terms of increased customer benefits and capacity.
It is an exciting new development and one which will not only increase throughput by up to 50% but will also provide a robust proposition to enable the business to accommodate the ever-increasing surge of online traffic whilst at the same time preserving the exemplary levels of service it provides to its B2B customers.
The new system will occupy less than a quarter of the floor space at its 150,000 sq foot hub with no impact on the current manual sortation or cross docking operation. Installation is due to commence in early May and will become fully operational in early July.
Renowned for having one of the most secure networks in the UK, the operation will still be caged, flexible and secure and the company will continue to conduct a manual sort of consignments which are unsuitable for an automated system such as wine and flowers.
However to further increase flexibility of operation City Link’s sortation system will have the capability of handling larger freight of up to 1.5m due to it having double decks enabling City Link to become leading edge in automated sortation of larger freight. Volumetric scanning will also be available as standard to further improve the efficiency of the process.
Security too will also remain paramount and visibility will be enhanced throughout the sortation process. As each item goes through the network an image is taken further supplemented by a 360 degree security camera which provides a total view of every consignment as it goes through the system providing added security.
City Link’s Processing & Linehaul Director Bob Powner commented: “This is a massive step forward for City Link and one which for me is one of the most exciting operational developments we have made in recent years.
“Not only will it enable us to further improve the level of service we provide to our customers in terms of both security and visibility it will also provide us with the flexibility we need in terms of the additional capacity we need in peak periods.
“Further having the ability to provide our customers with both an automated and manual sortation system is a powerful proposition and one which will place us at the forefront of the parcels delivery marketplace.”
This latest development comes just 12 months following City Link’s acquisition by Better Capital and is one of a number of enhancements which are designed to provide customers with increased levels of control, transparency and flexibility. These include the launch of ‘On Our Way’ service, improved International offering, enhancements to customer reporting & parcel tracking and major investments in all aspects of the company’s IT infrastructure.
